What flowers in October in Nosara

October is the wettest stretch of the Guanacaste year, and the gardens are at their greenest and least dramatic. The big flowering trees that make Costa Rica famous are mostly a dry-season event. What October gives you instead is depth: heavy foliage, constant small flowering, and the plants that simply never stop.
Fifty-two flowering plants on this estate are now mapped month by month at gardens.thesanctuaryestate.com/in-bloom.
Why do the famous trees flower in the dry season, not now?
Because they flower on bare wood, and that is the point.
Guanacaste’s dry forest trees drop their leaves in the rainless months and then flower on naked branches — cortez amarillo, poro-poro, the pink roble de sabana. With no foliage in the way, the display is total, and pollinators can find them from a distance. It is a dry-forest strategy, and it means the most spectacular flowering here happens in the months with the least water.
October is the opposite: everything is in full leaf, and flowering is steadier and quieter.
What is actually in flower now?
The reliable performers, most of which flower across many months rather than one:
- Bougainvillea — near-continuous, and the reason the entry walkway has colour whatever the month.
- Hibiscus, red and yellow, flowering all year.
- Heliconia — the lobster-claw kinds thrive in the wet, and this is their season.
- Ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata) — scent rather than spectacle, strongest in the evening.
- Plumeria — frangipani, flowering through the warm months.
- Passionflower (Passiflora edulis), which is also the fruit.
- Golden shower (Cassia fistula), hanging yellow racemes.
The In bloom guide separates each month into what is particular to it and what is simply always there — twenty-six of the fifty-two flower year-round.
Is this a good month to visit Nosara?
For the garden, yes, with a caveat. Everything is green, the light is soft, and the rain usually falls in the afternoon rather than all day. Roads are at their roughest, and the river runs high.
For the flowering trees, come between January and April — and see the property at its greenest while you are here.
How confident are these bloom months?
Honestly stated: mixed, and the guide says so per species. Some months are sourced from Costa Rican records. Many come from general tropical horticulture mapped onto Guanacaste’s seasons. A few are inferred.
The same caveat applies to the whole planting record. A tropical garden also does not obey a calendar the way a temperate one does. An unusual rain year moves things by weeks. We publish what we have observed and what the sources say, and correct it as the garden teaches us more.
The short version
October is the height of Guanacaste’s green season: full foliage and steady flowering rather than spectacle. Bougainvillea, hibiscus, heliconia, ylang-ylang, plumeria, passionflower and golden shower are all in flower on the estate. The dry-forest trees that flower on bare branches — cortez amarillo, poro-poro, roble de sabana — perform between January and April instead.
